Dear Students, Parents, Staff and Community,

You’ve probably seen the Re-entry Guidance published this week by the NM Public Education Department. (Also posted on our website:

This document contains a series of recommendations and requirements addressing all areas of school reopening, including transportation, meal service instruction, and the health and safety of both students and staff.

These recommendations do not necessarily constitute the reopening plan for Maxwell Municipal Schools.  The Maxwell Board of Education will work closely with administration to design a local plan that takes the Re-entry Guidance into account but also considers our building capacity, parent input that is being gathered through an online survey, and infection rates in Colfax County and the region. The survey link is posted to our website: Deadline for submission:  July 8, 2020

We are currently exploring several re-entry options, including (1) utilizing available space to bring all students back to school, while still complying with social distancing guidelines, and (2) designing a schedule in which students might attend two days on campus and two days online.

We will make accommodations for those students and staff at greater risk of infection due to underlying health conditions.  The use of self-contained classrooms would limit the need for students to move between classroom, instead staff will rotate to them.  Students and staff members will be required to wear masks, and the district will exercise daily preventative measure such as taking student and staff temperatures upon entry.  Any individual exhibiting symptoms of infection or illness will be isolated and sent home for treatment.

We may create staggered schedules for transportation and meal service to allow for greater social distancing during arrivals and departures, as well as breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria.  The buses and cafeteria spaces will be thoroughly sanitized after each use.

As much as possible, elementary recess and Athletic Hour will continue as a vital part of our school’s programming.

The details of the local plan will be finalized at a special school board meeting on July 13, and we must submit our plan to the Public Education Department by July 15.

While the uncertainty is frustrating, please know that our goal is and always will be to resume school for our students, staff and their families while keeping everyone safe.
